130th Anniversary of First Modern Olympic Games
The first modern Olympic Games began on April 6, 1896 in Athens with an opening ceremony at the Panathenaic Stadium, the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. Athens was chosen as the host city to honor the ancient Olympic Games, which had been held in Olympia at least since 776 BCE.
