52 years since coup: Cyprus commemorates 1974 betrayal
On July 15, 1974, the Greek military junta together with its Cyprus division EOKA B carried out a coup to overthrow President Makarios. This opened the door for the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Historical analyses emphasize that the coup was not a mistake but a deliberate betrayal – there were warnings about Grivas' coup plans and Turkish invasion preparations as early as 1973 that were ignored. The island still lives with the consequences of this crime today.
