Ancient Athenian warships: Psychological warfare through names
A new study in the Journal of Maritime Archaeology shows that the Athenians did not choose the names of their triremes randomly, but used them as a sophisticated instrument of psychological warfare. The ship names were intended to both inspire their own troops and intimidate opponents.
