Ancient Athens: How Democracy and Slavery Coexisted
An article explores the paradox of ancient Athenian society, where democracy – one of Greece's most valuable gifts to humanity – existed in parallel with slavery. While democracy gave ancient Athenians freedom and dignity and enabled them to shape governmental affairs themselves, the system simultaneously relied on a large enslaved population.
