Ancient Shamash Gate Shows Two Battles Separated by 2,500 Years
Archaeological research at the Shamash Gate in the ancient city of Nineveh has revealed traces of two violent historical events: the fall of the Assyrian capital in 612 BCE and the fighting to liberate Mosul from ISIS in 2017. The study, conducted under the direction of Timothy Harrison, was published in the academic journal IRAQ and analyzes one of the largest gates of the ancient city.
