Archaeologists Decipher Contents of Ancient Roman Giant Vessels
Scientists have for the first time investigated the function of the massive ceramic containers from the Roman port of Ostia. A study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science suggests that the 1,000-liter vessels were primarily used for storing fish sauce, demonstrating the sophistication of the ancient trading system. The discovery sheds new light on the commercial activities of the former Roman trading center.
