Asteroid Apophis Approaches Earth at Record Proximity
Asteroid 99942 Apophis will approach Earth at a distance of approximately 32,000 kilometers, making one of the closest approaches of a large asteroid in recorded history. Its orbit brings it closer to the planet than many geosynchronous satellites, which orbit at approximately 36,000 kilometers altitude. The asteroid is the size of the Eiffel Tower.
