Crimea was a flashpoint of conflict between the Byzantine Empire and the early Russian peoples, the Rus', during the Middle Ages. Their relations were characterized by trade, religious diplomacy, and military conflicts. However, by the end of the 11th century, a trade alliance and the foundations of Orthodox Christianity were established.
