Conflicting Commemorations of EOKA Uprising Divide Cyprus
President Nikos Christodoulides honored the historical significance of the EOKA uprising on its anniversary and emphasized the importance of historical awareness for resolving the Cyprus problem, while sending messages to Turkey, Turkish Cypriots and Britain. Turkish Cypriot President Ersin Tatar countered by criticizing that the glorification of EOKA does not lead to a common future but to the reproduction of past conflicts, describing EOKA for the Turkish Cypriot people as a symbol of pain, tears and oppression.
