Cyprus Celebrates 66th Anniversary of Independence
The Republic of Cyprus was founded on August 16, 1960, ending 82 years of British colonial rule. The founding was based on the Zurich and London Agreements of 1959, signed by Britain, Greece, Turkey, and representatives of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. Archbishop Makarios became the first President of the Republic.
