Cyprus Commemorates Victims of 1974 Coup Attempt
Cyprus marks on July 15, 2026 the 52nd anniversary of the coup attempt of July 15, 1974, when the Athens Junta and EOKA B attempted an overthrow against President Makarios. At 8:20 a.m., sirens will sound nationwide as a memorial sign, while government, parliament, and organized groups pay tribute to the fallen. The coup ultimately led to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and continues to divide the country.
