Cyprus has highest prison overcrowding in the EU
According to Eurostat data from 2024, Cyprus records the highest prison overcrowding in the European Union with an occupancy index of 227.6. Significantly behind are Slovenia (134.2) and France (129.3). The dramatic overcrowding presents a major challenge for the Cypriot prison system.
