Cyprus Has World's Highest Rate of Thalassemia Carriers
Approximately 15 percent of the Cypriot population are carriers of beta-thalassemia, positioning the island significantly above the worldwide average of 1.5 percent. Internationally, an estimated 80 to 90 million people are carriers of this genetic disease. The data was presented at a press conference citing international medical literature.
