Cyprus' Shipping Sector: Skills Shortage and Support for Young Talent
The international shipping industry is struggling with a shortage of approximately 39,000 qualified officers. Thomas Kazakos of the International Chamber of Shipping called for coordinated measures to recruit and train seafarers at the Malta Maritime Summit. At the same time, Cypriot companies are supporting the industry's next generation: Island Energies' Spyros Papavassiliou received an award for his contributions to the maritime industry, and Safe Bulkers is awarding 100,000 euros in scholarships to ten students in the current year, continuing its six-year support program for maritime education.
