ECB raised interest rates 14 times in 15 years to combat inflation
The European Central Bank implemented fourteen interest rate increases since 2011, with the most aggressive phase occurring in 2022-2023, when ten consecutive increases were implemented to fight high inflation. Between these periods, there was a prolonged period of negative interest rates. Monetary policy has thus fundamentally fluctuated between cheap and expensive money.
