EU mandates microchip implants for cats and stricter animal welfare standards
A new EU regulation that came into force on August 30, 2026, makes microchip implantation and registration of cats progressively mandatory, similar to what already applies to dogs. The regulation also introduces stricter standards for breeding, housing, animal purchases, and animal welfare across all member states. Operators of animal facilities must ensure adequate feeding, water supply, and safe shelter.
