Evolutionary Research: Genes Control Identical Patterns Over 120 Million Years
A new study in PLOS Biology shows that evolution repeatedly uses the same genes to produce identical wing color patterns in butterflies and moths that diverged from each other up to 120 million years ago. The research resolves a long-standing scientific debate about whether mimicry in nature is controlled by a few large genetic switches or many small changes in the genome.
