Germany's CDU Suffers Severe Election Defeats
Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the CDU suffered massive electoral losses in regional elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as well as in another election where the party received only 4.9 percent. Despite the severe defeats, Merz announced he will remain in office both as Chancellor and as CDU chairman. The successes of right-wing populists caused additional concern.
