Government slaughters up to 33,000 piglets to save pig industry
The Cypriot cabinet approved a compensation scheme for pig farmers after the European Commission expanded zones for foot-and-mouth disease and banned exports. Up to 33,000 healthy piglets are to be slaughtered under the support program to prevent sector collapse. Pig farmers are stuck with growing animal populations that they cannot export.
