Heinz Kounio: Last Auschwitz Survivor from Thessaloniki Passes Away
Heinz Kounio, the last known survivor of the first "death train" from Thessaloniki to Auschwitz, has died at the age of 98. With his death, a direct eyewitness account of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki comes to an end; Kounio was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau at age 15 in 1943.
