Hippocrates and the Ancient Theory of the "Wandering Womb"
Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates was the first to coin the term "hysteria" (from the Greek word hysteron for womb) in the 5th century BCE for a condition affecting exclusively women. Hippocrates developed the theory of the movement of the womb within the female body, known as the "wandering womb." Philosopher Plato also engaged with this medical assumption.
