The article addresses the historical figure of Moses of Crete, a messianic leader who presented himself as a savior and allegedly could part the sea. Following the failed Bar-Kokhba Rebellion against the Roman Empire, many messianic movements in Judaism disappeared, yet religious hope persisted and led to such charismatic figures as Moses of Crete.
