Leonidas of Tarentum: The first socially conscious ancient poet
Leonidas of Tarentum is regarded as one of the first 'socially engaged' Greek poets, as his work focused on fishermen, farmers, blacksmiths, and ordinary people who rarely appeared in elite literature. He was born in the 3rd century in the Greek colony of Tarentum in Magna Graecia.
