Pompeii research: Incense burners reveal ancient trade connections
A new study of residues in two ancient incense burners from household altars in Pompeii shows that residents burned both local plants and imported aromatic resins. The analysis provides rare evidence that daily worship in the city was closely connected to long-distance trade. The scents of household rituals originated from regions far outside the Roman world.
