Prison Overcrowding: 1,300 People in Cyprus Prisons
Cypriot prisons are drastically overcrowded with 1,300 persons (1,180 prisoners plus 120 in police detention facilities), while capacity is only 780. The problem is chronic, but until new prisons are built, alternative solutions must be found, as overcrowding itself does not constitute the main problem.
