September riots 1955: Makarios condemns pogrom in Istanbul
During the night of September 6-7, 1955, Greeks in Istanbul and Izmir were attacked during an anti-Greek pogrom. Archbishop Makarios III condemned the violence and called for the avoidance of counterattacks, while holding British authorities responsible.
