Shipping industry facing growing skills shortage
The global shipping sector will require nearly 114,000 additional ship officers by 2030, as demand for qualified seafarers exceeds supply worldwide. According to the new 2026 Seafarer Workforce Report by BIMCO and the International Maritime Chamber, 2.57 million certified seafarers currently work on 85,148 merchant vessels. The shortage of skilled personnel will continue to intensify.
