Smallpox virus DNA identified from Chilean mummies of the Conquest era
Researchers have for the first time extracted smallpox DNA from mummies dating to the time of the Spanish conquest in Chile, enabling new insights into the impact of infectious diseases on indigenous populations. Along with smallpox, diseases such as this had devastating consequences for the American population brought by Spanish conquistadors.
