The cult of the goddess Athena and the women of Athens
A historical article examines how the cult of the ancient Greek goddess Athena afforded some women of Athens greater freedoms that extended beyond traditional roles as mothers and housewives. Particularly courtesans and women engaged in religious activities experienced a different social position.
