The Theodosian Walls of Constantinople: A millennium of impregnable defense
As the wealthy capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, Constantinople was a tempting target for many rulers of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The city was therefore surrounded with a ring of defensive walls and fortifications. These imposing walls successfully defended the former Greek colony of Byzantium for over ten centuries.
