The warrior saints of the Byzantine Empire
A historical article describes the role of so-called warrior saints in the Byzantine Empire, who were Christian martyrs from early periods of persecution. In medieval Orthodox belief, only three of them were venerated as Byzantine soldiers and were regarded as patron saints of the armies. The article illuminates how faith and state were closely intertwined in the Byzantine Empire.
