UNESCO World Heritage status for Sebastia aims to halt Israeli expansion
Palestinian authorities welcome UNESCO's recognition of the ancient site of Sebastia in the occupied West Bank as a World Heritage site, hoping thereby to prevent further Israeli control over the territory. Israel, however, criticizes the decision as politically motivated. The village of Sebastia contains archaeological remains from various historical periods dating back at least to the earliest known settlement phases.
