Western Plundering of Greek Antiquities During the War of Independence
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Westerners systematically plundered Greek antiquities while Greece remained under Ottoman rule. The impoverished and oppressed population viewed ancient monuments partly as obstacles and partly as goods for sale. Even after the Greek War of Independence, the weak Greek state was unable to adequately protect its cultural heritage.
