Why the South Pole Froze Before the North Pole
Antarctica, once a temperate and lush climate, froze approximately 34 million years ago and became covered by an ice sheet up to 5 kilometers thick. The Arctic, by contrast, froze 25 million years later, which explains this polar asymmetry.
